It’s freezing outside in Rancho Mirage, CA, and your furnace decides to stop working correctly. Instead of the warm air you expect, it blows cold air through your house. Let’s find out why your furnace is blowing cold air when it’s chilly out.

Thermostat Troubles

Start by checking your thermostat. It sounds obvious, but sometimes, the settings accidentally get changed. Check to make sure it’s set to “heat” and that you set the temperature higher than it currently is in the room.

Also, check the batteries. This is because a dead battery can really mess things up.

Pilot Light Problems

Older furnaces sometimes have a pilot light. This is a small flame that starts the gas burner to heat your home. If this light goes out, your furnace will be unable to produce heat.

Usually, if you follow the instructions on the furnace, you can relight the pilot light yourself. If you’re not sure how to do it, it’s best to call someone who knows about furnaces to help you out.

Air Filter Issues

A dirty air filter can block airflow, causing your furnace to overheat. This can make your furnace shut down, and that’s why you might feel the vents emitting cold air. Change your air filter often, especially in the winter when your furnace is running a lot.

Ductwork Dilemmas

Your house has air ducts that carry your furnace’s warm air to all the rooms, and if there are any leaks or blockages, the warm air might not be able to reach your vents. Take a look at the ducts to see if you spot any problems, like holes or items blocking the air. If you think something is wrong with the ducts, you might need to call someone to fix them.

If you’ve checked everything else and you’re still getting cold air, the problem might be with the furnace itself. There could be a broken part, like the igniter or the blower motor. If you need a furnace repair to fix the problem, contact Vic’s Air Conditioning.
